An excursion into the history of pearl fishing in the UAE
Many years ago in Ras al Khaimah, one of the main types of craft was the extraction of natural sea pearls. An excursion to the Suwaidi Pearls pearl farm in Ras al Khaimah, the only one on the Arabian peninsula, will tell interesting facts about the life of pearl divers, about the features of natural wild pearls. Getting to natural pearls is not so easy, and especially in those days. After all, then divers from special diving equipment had only a nose clip and a basket where they put oysters under water. It was quite hard work, especially considering the fact that not every shell could find pearls. Out of 1000 oysters caught, only 10 of them found natural pearls. You will learn a lot of interesting facts and secrets about natural pearls from the guide's story, see natural and cultured pearls firsthand, learn how easy it is to open an oyster shell and much more. If desired, you can buy handmade souvenirs.
The Suwaidi Pearls Pearl Farm is located right in the sea, surrounded by the Jebel Rams mountain ranges. Therefore, the excursion to the farm begins with a trip on a wooden boat from the fishing village of Al Rams. This is a picturesque place with a unique atmosphere. Wooden fishing boats are cruising here, the sea breeze is blowing, soaked in salt and the smell of shrimp, fishermen are slowly sorting through the nets. The farm is named after its founder Abdullah Al Suwaidi, a natural pearl diver who decided to preserve the traditions of pearl fishing as a cultural heritage of the UAE. But now pearls are cultivated here, collections of pearls grown in the Persian Gulf, you will see with your own eyes. And you can also try to open the sink yourself and take the found pearl with you.
